A Very Special Gift

 The Backstory

In September of 1974 Steve and I got married and moved back to our hometown area. Steve joined the local fire company and we settled in.

With the first fire call we realized that the man living downstairs was also with the fire company. We could hear his scanner go off ---- apparently better than he did as he often slept through it. A bit of stomping on the floor took care of that.

It wasn't long before his wife and I started having tea while the guys were out on calls. It was a whole lot better than sitting alone. Besides she had cats! And, we got along really well. (Still do -- even after 46 years.)

We became very good friends ..... through her moves, our moves, we always kept in touch. Sometimes not as often as we should have, but always in my heart.

Fast forward to 2017 when we moved back to Pennsylvania. I located her on Facebook and messaged that if she ever got back to Pennsylvania, we lived in the area again. I assumed she was still in Tennessee.

Spoiler alert .....she wasn't.

Two weeks before we moved to Warrington,

she had moved to Blue Bell.

She was literally less than 10 miles away.

So, now we get together every few weeks and either have breakfast at a local dive or if it is nice enough, walk around Lake Galena.

Bringing it back to current times now . . .

Danika lives on an equestrian farm that is going through transition after the death of the owner. One of her farm friends is getting reading to move down to Florida permanently and was cleaning out a few things. The friend's mom used to own a needlepoint shop back in the 70s and Holly had a few of her things that she wasn't taking with her and wanted to know if Danika wanted any of them. She picked something for herself (an owl wall hanging) and something for me.

How cute is that?

I was going to use it as my daily project bag, but I decided it might be a bit rough on it. Instead it is holding all the minis for my mitred-square blanket.

The needlepoint is done beautifully.

It's the perfect addition to my craft room.

  4. Oooh, the otter bag is adorable! I chuckled that you stamped on the floor to alert the sound sleeper of his scanner.

  7. What a sweet bag. The story of your friendship is heart warming. I can just picture you having tea to ward off the worries. My dad worked trouble crew with the power company and I know how hard that was on my mom when he was out on a call.
